Optical Fiber Fabry–Perot Interferometer Based Spirometer: Design and Performance Evaluation

Spirometry enables the diagnosis and monitoring of multiple respiratory diseases, such as asthma chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). In this paper, we present an optical fiber-based device to evaluate capacity individuals through spirometry. The proposed system consists fiber containing intrinsic Fabry–Perot interferometer (FPI) micro-cavity attached a 3D printed structure that converts air flow into strain variations fiber, modulating FPI spectral response. Besides providing value flow, its direction is also determined, which differentiation between inhale exhale cycles breathing. A simulation study was conducted predict behavior with flow. preliminary tests, performed FPI-based spirometer led average values forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) vital (FVC) parameters 4.40 L 6.46 L, respectively, FEV1/FVC index (used airway function index) 68.5%. An 5.35 L/s found for peak (PEF). comparison spirometry tests using presented commercial electronic showed suitable act reliable spirometer.
